Facing the Issues

Over the past decade, problems relating to cavity wall tie failure resulted in the need for a specialist nationwide industry dealing with the supply and installation of remedial products.

Wall tie failure is the inability of a wall tie to perform its function of tying two leaves of brickwork together.

Failure is normally due to corrosion of the metal ties. This causes the integrity of the connection of the brickwork leaves to be put in question and therefore the overall structural stability of the wall.

The present British Standard BS 1243 specification for Metal Ties for Cavity Construction was amended in 1981 to increase protection of wall ties against deterioration. Properties constructed before 1981 therefore have potential problems.

Early detection and remedial actions are critical if the structural integrity and aesthetic appearance of such buildings are to be preserved.

The BWTSRA aims to create, improve and maintain high standards for installers and manufacturers of remedial wall ties.

The principal aim of the association is to promote advance awareness of property owners in a professional body whose member companies have shown the capability to provide a quality product and service, based on accepted techniques and a code of practice.

Through the standards demanded of its members, the BWTSRA offers property owners and specifiers overall confidence in the manufacture and installation of remedial wall ties.

The association watches over the interests and activities of people and companies working in the industry.

The BWTSRA encourages and fosters the best possible working practices and conditions, and exacts the highest standards from members.
